Sierra Nevada Ruthless Rye IPA
I came across this beer for the first time a few weeks ago and was intrigued by the combination. I used Rye a few times back in the day as a brewer, but was never quite happy with how it blended into the malt flavors of a beer.
Interestingly, Sierra Nevada solved this problem by using Rye in an IPA - a style marked by strong, spicy accents.
Sierra Nevada Ruthless Rye IPA is a deep copper orange color and pour with a thick brown head that stays creamy throughout, benefitting from the proteins in the rye malt. It has a slight haze, similar to a filtered wheat beer, again from protein rich rye malt.
The aroma is spicy, with citrus notes and a little nutty / breadiness, presumably from the rye. The aroma hops in this beer are Chinook hops, a traditional buttering hop that is one of the strongest spiciest hops available.
It packs a hop punch right from the start. Like taking a bite out of a hop apple, its all spice and hop bitterness, a drying sensation that lingers. The body is medium, leaning towards full with some definite alcohol notes. The rye malt comes through as nutty and peppery, complementing the spicy hop notes.
Ruthless Rye IPA is a nice addition to Sierra Nevada's seasonal beer mix. They continue to experiment with new beer styles, Kellerweis is my favorite, and excel at all things hops. This beer fits in nicely.
