Boston Beer Works Fenway Pale Ale

This is a beer close to my heart - I played a role in the original design of Fenway Pale Ale and brewed it for many years while I was a brewer at Beer Works. It is still one of my go to beers, alongside Back Bay IPA, when I visit Beer Works for Red Sox games.

Beer Works started bottling the beer in the past few years. I visited their Lowell brewery and bottling line about two years ago - when Acquia was based in Andover - and they were still experimenting with their process for filling, bottle conditioning and more.

Anchor Humming Ale

I'm always pleasantly surprised when I see a new beer from one of my favorite breweries. Sierra Nevada, Dogfish Head and others have introduced a steady stream of new brews that highlight why they are some of the best breweries around. Now Anchor Brewing is playing along too, with their new beer Humming Ale.  Humming is their first new seasonal in five years, introduced in bottles for the first time in 2010.

Its a copper colored mouthful of hops, another example of what's becoming an IPA renaissance. The nose is balanced, a blend of sweet and citrus notes.

Wachusett Green Monsta Ale

Hoppy beers & the Red Sox have been passions of mine since in moved to Boston in 1992.  So when I saw Wachusett Brewing Company's Green Monsta Ale - described as a BIG pale ale - I had to get a six pack.

Its copper colored, nice thick head that lasted the whole glass.  The aroma is earthy, a little spicey - which makes sense given the combination of Fuggles and East Kent Golding hops.  Its a nice change of pace from the big floral Cascade nose that you typically get with American pale ales. 

Those hops come kick-in with full force from the first taste - this is a bitter beer with strong hop

Sierra Nevada 2009 Estate Brewers Harvest Ale

Sierra Nevada's Estate Brewers Harvest Ale is a beer makers play on the regional winemakers focus on their terrior, the flavor characteristics produced by the unique local environmental conditions - the fertile soil, rainfall and Central Valley setting. All of the hops and barley used in this beer are grown on-site and, given the brewery's long time affinity for pale ales, the resulting beer is a reflection of their passion for aromatic, hoppy beers.

The beer has a deep copper, orange color that extends to the foam head when poured.
